Benitez has not been a success and, despite a remarkable 10-2 win over Rayo Vallecano, is clinging on to his job as well as being aware of Real Madrid’s interest in his bitter rival Mourinho.

Mourinho made it clear after being axed by Chelsea that he wanted to get straight back into management and also made a pointed remark about staying in England.

But Real Madrid are determined to get their man and it is believed that not all of the hierarchy at Old Trafford are in favour of Mourinho because of his troublesome reputation and baggage that comes with him.
