Morgans joined Liverpool in October 2012 while Brendan Rodgers was manager, but will end his three-and-a-half year stay at Anfield in order to pursue new challenges.

"This has been an extremely difficult decision to reach, but I feel now is the right time to move on and pursue a new challenge.

I will always be grateful to Brendan Rodgers for giving me the opportunity to work at the highest club level of the game alongside some of the biggest figures in the industry," he told the clubs official website.

"There have been some amazing experiences along the way and to serve a club of this stature is an honour and a privilege I will never forget. However, professionally, it is time to seek a new challenge.

Tomlinson, who is a lifelong Doncaster Rovers fan, is said to be a huge admirer and producer Adrian Buchart, who wrote hit film Goal!, has made a bold move to try and get him involved.

Buchart told the Mail : "We are keen to shoot the movie as soon as possible, but we are now going to have to wait until after the Euros to know where the story ends as these unbelievable events continue to unfold.

With flak being hurled at the United boss from all corners after their abject display at Anfield, Fellaini has surprisingly come to the Dutchman’s aid before today’s must-win FA Cup showdown with West Ham.

Midfield star Fellaini said: “We didn’t press well in the first half. I think the second half was much better and we had more possession of the ball.

“But in the first half we didn’t show enough respect to the game-plan of the manager. That’s why we conceded a lot of chances.

“The plan before the game was to press from the start. We didn’t do it well at all first half so we changed in the second half and it was better.” 

Former United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes blamed the 2-0 Merseyside mauling on a lack of leadership and cohesion at United.

United’s crisis-hit season hit a new low with Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League last-16 first leg defeat at arch-rivals Liverpool, which has left them on the brink of exiting the competition.

Boss Van Gaal’s feeble side managed just one shot on target at Anfield and had goalkeeper David De Gea to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.

The Europa League debacle came on the back of defeat at West Brom in the Premier League, and the dispirited Red Devils next host a high-flying West Ham in an FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.

Van Gaal's sixth-placed side now face a desperate battle to remain in Europe and clinch a top-four finish that would book them a place in next season’s Champions League. 

The eventual winners of the Europa League also qualify for UEFA's elite club competition.

Former United stars turned TV pundits Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand laid into Van Gaal after the Liverpool defeat, accusing him of stripping the Reds of their traditional attacking swagger.

But defiant Van Gaal hit back, claiming his much-maligned philosophy is working and blaming a glut of injuries for United’s current malaise.

“When you don’t have many players [because of injuries] and have to play in three competitions, it’s difficult to play.

“It’s not giving the best results, but I think it’s working – yes. The style is also working - yes.”

Despite the flak he has copped, Van Gaal pointed to the fact United remain in contention in three competitions, and his belief they can win a trophy.

“It’s not good enough when you think you have to be champions or win the Europa League and FA Cup,” he conceded. 

“I don’t want to hide behind the injuries but we are still in three competitions, we can fight for a lot.

“Still we have the chance to win something. You have to believe in that — a lot of my [managerial] colleagues are not in three competitions any more.”
